Job Purpose

Responsible for working with members of the University, OCP group and other key stakeholders to deliver a world class High Performance Computing Service

To play a significant role in setting national HPC agendas with a view to placing this University in the centre of research and innovation opportunities. 

To  work with senior researchers to formulate successful bids. 

 

Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities

 

Planning

  • To provide operational leadership in the delivery of HPC services at the University and to external partners and customers,
  • Interface and manage relationships on multiple levels with multiple stakeholders, including Government, local and global industry and local and international research organizations, including universities and similar centers, globally.
  • To assist the Executive Director in creating the future strategy and roadmap for research computing; aligned to the Universities aspirations and requirements, now and into the future. 
  • Manage the operational budget for research computing in line with the Centers overall strategy, financial goals and the objectives of Research Computing
  • Act as project senior supplier, guiding to completion the delivery of multiple major ICT projects. This includes the management and control of project budgets including the management of external consultants to ensure the successful delivery of the projects.
  • Manage a team of specialist/professional staff  focused on High Performance Computing providing guidance, support and direction to achieve quality provision and to deliver on the Centers objectives; answerable for the development of service delivery and compliance with current and future objectives, service level agreements, professional standards, best practice, regulations and national codes of practice
  • Stimulate, support and grow research and development competences in the various domains of high-performance computing on a national level.

Working with the Executive Director to significantly increase the national pool of appropriately qualified and experienced HPC professionals for both the research community and industry.

 

Internal & External Relationships: (nature & purpose of relationships)

The role will require the post holder to work in both the National and International Research arenas. ? All discipline units within UM6P, senior researchers, Heads of Departments and governing bodies

 

Special Requirements

There may be a requirement to work varying core hours, and on occasion to work outside normal hours, to ensure that service commitments are met.

Regional and International travel will be a core requirement for this post.

 

Person Specification

 

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:  

    - Higher Degree, equivalent higher qualification, or significant relevant technical experience

   - Demonstrable experience of the use of HPDIC in a significant research area. 

   - Recent and relevant knowledge of HPDIC issues and opportunities.

   - Substantial professional experience operating at a senior level within an ICT management framework

Planning and Organising:

   - Proven organisational skills

   - Demonstrable experience of managing a complex workload and meeting conflicting deadlines 

Problem Solving and Initiative:

   - Demonstrable experience of resolving complex projects which may involve influencing representatives of external organisations

Management and Teamwork:

   - Experience of working in a highly technical team

   - Proven ability to make decisions in a confident manner under pressure.

   - Demonstrable ability to manage resources and deliver to budget and to time.

   - Extensive experience of managing teams, including motivating, encouraging, performance management etc

Communicating and Influencing:

   - Demonstrable ability to present complex ideas, to a senior audience.

   - Proven communication skills including report writing, presentations appropriate to the level of audience, to bring about change.

Other Skills and Behaviours:

  - Proven experience of managing a substantial budget  

  - Methodical, calm and clear-thinking under pressure

  - Able to work in a pressurised environment, which changes rapidly.

Special Requirements:

  - The post-holder will be required to occasionally work outside normal office hours.

  - The post holder will be expected to travel offsite and overnight.
