Thermal energy storage systems offer promising solutions to the global energy problem by storing energy produced by renewable sources in a very cost-effective manner. As an example, thermal energy storage is widely used in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants to store heat during on-sun hours and then use it during off-sun hours in order to match a variable electricity demand with an intermittent energy source supply, thus enabling energy production according to needs and enhancing energy generation dispatchability. There are three forms to store heat in sensible, latent and thermochemical methods. The latter, thermochemical energy storage, has many advantages over latent and sensible heat storages, including not only the highest energy density, but also the possibility to release heat at a constant temperature defined by the reaction equilibrium and storing energy for a long period without significant losses. Reversible hydration/dehydration reactions have been investigated as very promising candidates for thermochemical energy storage applications. For example, one of the most investigated reactions is the hydration/dehydration of calcium oxide material that proceeds in a system with steam as a reactant and working fluid at the same time, according to the following reactions:

Endothermic: Ca(OH)2 ? CaO + H2O

Exothermic: CaO + H2O ? Ca(OH)3

Among the main limitation of the investigated systems is the limited number of available reversible reactions which can meet to the final application requirements regarding the adequate temperature, complete reversibility and fast kinetics of the reaction. In this regard, the objective of this project is to develop innovative mixed oxide materials like perovskite and spinel families. These materials will first be prepared using different preparation methods such as sol-gel, co-precipitation, hydrothermal and solid-state reaction. Then, their thermodynamic performances will be evaluated by different laboratory techniques. Finally, the thermal stability and long-term durability of the most promising materials will be assessed by a laboratory-scale reactor that will be developed as part of the project.
