Description of main research theme: 

Long-lasting charging times are a key drawback for Li-ion batteries in consumer applications particularly in electric vehicles. Current Li-ion battery chemistries have shown potential for much faster charging whereas still remaining within a safe electrochemical and thermal operating envelope. However, to operate at these higher charging rates requires diagnostic capabilities beyond those typically offered by battery management systems (BMS), which rely on measurements of DC voltage, current and temperature often made on only a fraction of the cells in the system. New diagnostic techniques capable of detecting fault conditions in real-time are required in order to advance the state-of-the-art in battery management and enable faster charging.  This PhD project aims to develop a technique through a combined approach employing electrochemical modelling and practical experimentation on state-of-the-art instrumented Li-ion cells, in order to demonstrate its feasibility for real-time diagnostics and control of ultra-fast charging processes.

DUTIES:

The specific responsibilities of PhD candidates are as follows:

The successful candidate will perform a diagnostic technique capable of detecting fault conditions lithium-ion batteries, in order to demonstrate its feasibility for real-time diagnostics and control of ultra-fast charging processes.

Full cells will be made, and a suite of electrochemical and analytical techniques utilized to understand the fast charging and cell properties. The PhD candidate responsibility is to pursue the doctoral studies. He is expected to develop his scientific concepts and communicate the results of his research both orally and in writing.

REQUIRMENTS:

The candidate will have or expect at least an undergraduate honours degree or Masters degree (or equivalent) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline. A background on electrochemistry and modelling would be advantageous
