Job description:

The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for a position as PhD student within the Center for Remote Sensing Applications (CRSA). The PhD thesis is entitled: Assessment of the impacts of climate forcing factors on drought characteristics using multi-source remote sensing data.

The population and water demand are rapidly growing in the dryland regions of the world. More than 25% of the world’s population, at least 1.5 billion people, currently live-in areas with a physical scarcity of water. Arid and semi-arid regions occur in about 30% of the total land area of the world where the exploration and monitoring of water resources is a prerequisite for water accessibility, rational use and management.

Drought has adverse and far-reaching impacts on water resources. Thus, drought assessment and analysis are key to sound water resources management and planning. Distinctively, drought is assessed under meteorological, agricultural, hydrological and socio-economical aspects. Therefore, to investigate large arid areas for water, conventional land-based techniques have to be supplemented using multi satellite remote sensors.

The objective of this study is to review recent progress in the area of drought using remote sensors and satellite gravitational mappings linked with ancillary data analysis to infer groundwater behaviour from surface expressions and monitor drought-related variables by assessing the impacts of natural climate variation and future climate change scenarios. The geographic focus of the work will be semi-arid basins in the sub-Saharan Africa.

 

Key duties:

The work to be performed by the PhD researcher will include mainly:

  • Performing a comprehensive comparison of the established drought indices and understand quantitative relationship between drought impact and drought occurrence. Investigates the causes and characteristics of drought types as well as their link with climate variability and climate change
  • Developing new drought indices based on remote sensing data and statistical methods to quantify drought for each type (e.g., meteorological, hydrological agricultural, and hydrogeological).
  • Contribution to the development of the near-real-time drought-monitoring and reporting system over the African continent.
  • Writing peer-reviewed scientific publications and presentation for scientific conferences.

 

 

Profil recherché :

?Criteria of the candidate:

The ideal candidate should have a master or engineering degree in earth or environmental sciences, water management, physics or related disciplines.

 

Skills:   

The successful applicant should have:

  • Good background in remote sensing and GIS;
  • Experience with field measurements/activities;
  • Technical skills to handle spatial data and remote sensing time series;
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab or R);
  • Good knowledge of machine learning and statistics;
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills,
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team.
