As advancements in Earth Observation (EO) technologies continue to revolutionize environmental research, there is an increasing demand for specialized expertise in remote sensing applications. CRSA is seeking a skilled professional for the role of Research Engineer in UAV Remote Sensing Operations. This position focuses on the operational aspects of UAV deployment in remote sensing, particularly in the realm of environmental and agricultural applications. The ideal candidate will bring a multidisciplinary approach, combining technical proficiency in UAV technologies with a strong understanding of environmental dynamics, to enhance CRSA's data collection and analysis capabilities. This role is pivotal in advancing CRSA's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge remote sensing technologies for sustainable natural resource management. The new team player is expected to play major role to:

 

 

  • Managing and executing advanced UAV operations with a focus on integrating state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies.
  • Developing innovative methods for UAV-based data collection and analysis to support research and educational initiatives.
  • Ensuring maintenance, calibration, and readiness of UAV systems, including hyperspectral, LiDAR, and thermal sensors.
  • Organizing and conducting field missions for research and executive education programs at CRSA.
  • Collaborating with international partners on UAV technology integration and staying abreast of advancements in remote sensing.
  • Supporting research, education, and executive education programs at CRSA through innovative UAV remote sensing applications.

 

CRSA is seeking a Research Engineer in UAV Remote Sensing Operations, focused on advanced technologies in remote sensing. The ideal candidate will manage and execute UAV operations, develop innovative data collection methods, and support CRSA's research and educational programs. This role requires expertise in UAV systems, including hyperspectral, LiDAR, Multispectral, Photogrammetric camera and thermal sensors, and a commitment to multidisciplinary approaches in remote sensing. The position involves contributing to CRSA's research, teaching, and community outreach, leveraging advanced remote sensing technologies to reinforce the ongoing broad topical areas of interest to CRSA and CASE such as:

  • Land use/land cover change,
  • Natural resources management,
  • Soil cover assessment/mapping,
  • Arid & semi-arid soils and environments,
  • Soil and environmental health,
  • Carbon management and dynamics,
  • Agricultural management practices,
  • Greenhouse gas and climate change mitigation and adaptation,
  • Water management.

 

The successful candidate should exhibit independence, technical insight, and teamwork, focusing on operational expertise in UAV remote sensing. His role demands hands-on management of advanced UAV systems, emphasizing innovative operational solutions in collaboration with international academic and institutional partners. 

 

Key Duties:

  • Generating scientific outcomes from research utilizing advanced UAV remote sensing technologies.
  • Developing innovative proposals in remote sensing applications, including hyperspectral, LiDAR, and thermal imaging.
  • Managing projects and collaborations with various research entities.
  • Contributing to scientific publications and reports in the field of remote sensing.
  • Supervising students and disseminating research findings, particularly in UAV-based remote sensing applications.

More specifically, the successful candidate is expected to have the capacity to:

 

  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary research teams to integrate UAV data into broader environmental and agricultural studies.
  • Analyzing and interpreting UAV-gathered data to support research findings and applications.
  • Ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards and safety protocols for UAV operations.
  • Engaging in field testing and validation of UAV systems and sensors.
  • Providing technical support and problem-solving for UAV operations and data acquisition challenges.
  • Report on continuous needs for development of CRSA UAS and maintain equipment ready for effective deployment.
  • Develop and document workflows and SOPs for various aspects related to CRSA UAS solutions.
  • Implement and manage a Preventive Maintenance Schedule for UAVs and related remote sensing equipment, ensuring regular inspections and upkeep.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate experience in handling research field equipment, especially UAVs and similar remote systems. Key qualifications include technical and operational expertise in UAV remote sensing, strong communication skills in English (French proficiency advantageous), and solid soft skills for success in technological research. Additionally, the candidate should possess the stamina for extensive fieldwork under stress and maintain high work standards in challenging environments, reflecting adaptability, flexibility, and effective collaboration in diverse research settings.

    1. A minimum of a Master's degree in a field related to Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Environmental Science, or similar, reflecting the educational level in the CV.
    2. Substantial experience in operational and technical aspects of field research equipment, particularly UAVs and remote-operated systems.
    3. Proficiency in handling and maintaining sophisticated field equipment under various environmental conditions.
    4. Demonstrated ability to perform extensive fieldwork under stress while maintaining high work standards.
    5. Strong communication skills in English, with adaptability and flexibility in dynamic research settings.
    6. Experience in collaborative projects with diverse teams, contributing technical expertise in UAV operations and data analysis.
    7. Stamina for rigorous fieldwork, ensuring operational efficiency and data accuracy in challenging conditions.
    8. Professional experience in well-known research entities, demonstrating a background in conducting sophisticated fieldwork, particularly with UAVs and related technologies.
    9. Proven track record of effective field operation management and technical prowess in UAV-based remote sensing applications.
    10. Strong communication and collaborative skills for working in diverse research teams and environments.
    11. Proven experience in establishing and executing Preventive Maintenance Schedules for technical equipment, particularly in a research or laboratory setting.
