A career isn't built by chance. Opportunities are created, talents are developed. Sometimes, you need outside help to put things in perspective and find your way in life.
Marc Dumaine founded Asana Coaching three years ago. Holding an MBA in business strategy, he worked as a strategic consultant for Cirque du Soleil before specializing in emotional intelligence. His goal: to help people reach their full potential. An interview with a passionate individual.
Why business coaching?
What makes some people succeed in life while others are doomed to fail? For me, it's a matter of tools and well-being. In school, we aren't taught the essentials: Facing failure, developing a life plan, and pursuing our passions. We evolve in a performance-driven society, but we often realize that we aren't satisfied. This leads to burnout, bankruptcy, stress, etc.
More specifically, a coach can help people in many areas related to the world of work: Preparing for job interviews, managing conflicts, developing leadership skills, setting goals, eliminating obstacles, managing stress, etc.
Who is it for?
In my opinion, everyone should have a good coach! I would like business coaching to become more accessible; it should be a given, like for athletes. Alexandre Despatie, even though he knew how to dive, would never have won gold without a good coach! Coaching is for people looking for jobs, salespeople, supervisors, executives, and self-employed workers, for example.
Concretely, how does it work?
First, make sure your coach is qualified and trained. Some people improvise as professional coaches! As for the meetings, they are scheduled between the two parties. These are weekly meetings. The coach focuses on finding concrete solutions; they won't have you talk about your problems for two months. You shouldn't wait until things go wrong to turn to a business coach! Note: sometimes, these services can be reimbursed by your private insurance. Check it out!
What advice would you give?
The best advice I could give is to be authentic. Currently, in today's market, this characteristic is becoming rarer. People want to fit in, to be politically correct. However, those who stand out are the most authentic. The happier you are, the more successful you will be!
