Area of Specialization:

The incumbent will join the Chair of Soil Science as a Research Engineer in Soil Data Analysis.

Job Description:

We are looking for a versatile engineer to join the Chair of Soil Science, to develop and support the research program in soil science and carbon sequestration. Our ambition is to capitalize on scientific knowledge to better understand the complex nature of our soils and the soil organic matter to support the green transition in Africa. As an engineer in our team, you will play an essential role in the realization of this research program and actively contribute to the preservation and enhancement of our natural resources. Your versatility will be an invaluable asset in carrying out the various tasks and responsibilities entrusted to you. Key Duties:

  1. Undertake and support soil carbon and greenhouse gases modeling at local, landscape and national scales.
  2.  Apply modelling tools such as DayCent model and others to assess the soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration potential of agricultural practices, including tillage, crop rotations and fertilizers.
  3. Parameterize model using data from peer-reviewed articles, reports and technical bulletins, as defined by the research team.
  4. Define and maintain the databases, including organizing data for optimal retrieval in structured and unstructured analyses and making updates as required to add missing data and correct errors.
  5. Prepare tables, graphics, illustrations and written texts that explain the findings of the model.
  6. Organize digital data and other digital resources in formats that are suitable for dissemination, according to open science principles.
  7. Perform other duties as required by their supervisor.

Profil recherché :

Criteria for the Candidate:

 

To excel in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications and attributes:

 

  • Engineering degree or Master of Science in Agronomy, Soil Science, or any other relevant field, with good scientific knowledge on agronomy, soil science, soil organic carbon/ soil organic matter.
  •  At least one (1) year of relevant work experience in data analysis that is demonstrated to be closely related to the soil organic carbon and modeling topics.
  • Knowledge of, and willingness to acquire the skills to apply biophysical models for simulating soil organic carbon (DayCent, CropSyst, RothC, etc.).
  • Proficiency with geographic information systems (GIS) and a strong understanding of spatial structure across land units.
  • Competent in programming languages such as Java, Python, R and others, in offline and cloud computing applications.
  • Ability to integrate knowledge across different disciplines.
  • Capable of managing professional relationships, and working independently and with teams in a dynamic working environment.
  • Values the sharing of information and continuous improvements in a cooperative atmosphere of constructive evaluation and learning and be committed to professional development.

Contract Type: CDD 12 month contract
