Smart thermostats offer a superior alternative to programmable thermostats, enabling users to effectively manage energy consumption in residential HVAC systems. Some smart thermostats even incorporate machine-learning (ML) algorithms to generate accurate thermal models. However, existing literature lacks a suitable ML scheme that fully harnesses the potential of smart thermostats. Currently, centralized (CL) or federated learning (FL) schemes are employed, necessitating a central server. Unfortunately, this server poses risks such as being a single point of failure and compromising data privacy and security. Additionally, the one-size-fits-all approach adopted by CL and FL schemes is inadequate as each home has unique characteristics and thermal comfort requirements. Personalized and accurate thermal models need to be developed to address this limitation.
At the College of Computing in UM6P and with the research group led by Professor Robert Basmadjian, there is an available position for a Research Engineer (RE) lasting 12 months. The role of the RE involves working within the context of the PePTM project, leveraging the peer-to-peer learning scheme for the use case of smart thermostats.
Among others, the main tasks include:
1. The creation of a comprehensive, open-source anomaly-free dataset for thermal models in Smart Buildings.
2. Optimization of energy consumption of training and implementation of PePTM on IoT devices.
3. Designing and prototyping of the Proof-of-Concept Green Energy Park’s (GEP) houses.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Strong team player with a passion for exploring and deploying HVAC systems using IoT.
2. Master's degree in Computer Science and/or Computer Engineering.
3. Proficiency in contemporary programming languages like Python, Kotlin, Java, etc.
4. Advanced knowledge in machine learning especially the peer to peer scheme.
5. Understanding of system integration within Android and Linux operating environments.
