« Tell me about yourself »: The answer that makes the difference

It is almost always the first question, and yet it is one of the least prepared.

It seems open, harmless, almost kind. In reality, it sets the tone for the entire interview.

An answer that goes in all directions, or that recites your CV line by line, and the recruiter can tune out in the first few seconds.

What the recruiter really expects

He already has your CV in front of him.

He doesn't want you to read it aloud again.

He wants to understand, in a few dozen seconds, who you are professionally and why you are in front of him today.

The real question is therefore not really "tell me your life story".

It's more like: "Help me quickly understand your background and what brings you here."

The three-step structure

A good answer can be given in three simple steps.

First, where you are today: your current situation in one sentence.

Then, where you come from: the thread of your journey, keeping only the experiences that make sense for the targeted position.

Finally, where you want to go: the link between your background and the opportunity for which you are interviewing.

Present, past, future.

Simple, clear, and focused on the job.

Classic pitfalls

Reciting your CV.

Going too far back into the past.

Talking for two minutes without really answering the question.

Or forgetting to link your background to the job you are aiming for.

The good answer doesn't need to be long.

Above all, it must be fluid, structured, and easy to understand.

Reading is not enough

You can know this structure by heart and still lose your composure on the day.

Why?

Because an answer that seems perfect in your head can become much less clear when said aloud.

That's exactly why we created traak, our oral coaching application for job interviews.

You answer aloud as if you were facing a real recruiter, an AI analyzes your answer based on concrete criteria, and then you see what works and what you can improve.

You repeat until your answer is truly ready.

Move from theory to practice

With traak, don't just prepare your answers in your head anymore.

Practice saying them aloud, face real interview questions, and immediately discover what works and what you can still improve.

Start your training on traak and prepare for your next interview before it really counts.
