Carbon is a very important element for high-tech products and emerging innovations due to its characteristics and different textural and structural properties. The natural graphite which is a critical raw material constitutes a potential risk of economic importance mainly linked to the dependence and restrictions on imports and actual supply for industrial production units of carbon materials. So, the diversification of raw materials giving rise to carbon is a crucial issue for the development of the energy sector and relevant applications for Morocco where the energy strategy is very ambitious.

The project aims to prove the potential of Moroccan oil shale to produce carbon martials for energy sector. We mainly aim to extract organic matter and to transform it to carbon foams, carbon fibers and activated carbon and to apply the obtained materials to develop batteries. The principal objective is to investigate the potentialities of these materials in electrochemical storage and structural batteries.

The candidate will carry out Research and Development activities, including (and not limiting to):

- Extraction of organic matter from oil shale and preparation of precursors

- Processing precursors into carbonaceous and graphitic materials (fibre, foam, activated carbon) and process optimization

- Design and production of the spinning device

- Elaboration of carbon fibers of infinite length.

- Design of materials, based on the carbons obtained, for electrochemical applications (Lithium-ion storage, electroanalysis, capacitive electrode, ...)

- Electrochemical tests & Application of Carbon materials in the development of batteries.

The candidate must have a strong motivation for experimental work and several knowledge about oil shale rocks. It is also required to have:

- Good knowledge of the production and transformation processes of carbonaceous materials

- Skills in Design, Modeling and Optimization

Profile and skills

- Degree in chemistry or physics-chemistry (Bac +5)

- Experience in at least one of the following fields: materials characterization (Raman, TGA, XRF...), physicochemical extraction methods.
