Nanocomposites based on bio-based polymers: heterogeneous, reusable catalysts for Pietro Biginelli condensation

About CBS

The department Chemical & Biochemical Sciences. Green Process Engineering (CBS) is a component of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). The main objective of CBS is to set up an original research-teaching program, of international level, to meet the challenges of UM6P in terms of research and teaching, in particular in chemistry and green processes with an environmental and sustainable impact. CBS is interested in all aspects of chemical, biochemical, and green process engineering. Research at CBS is organized around several major areas, which aim to answer relevant industrial questions, to implement nationally adaptable solutions to support the Moroccan industry and economy and its independence. The CBS projects aim at understanding in depth the molecular mechanisms of all transformations to propose new original alternatives in terms of efficiency, environmental impact and sustainability.

Description of the internship

Due to their high degree of atom economy and ability to build complex target molecules/frameworks in a convergent manner, one-pot multicomponent reactions (MCRs) have generated a great deal of research interest in synthetic organic, pharmaceutical, and materials chemistry during the past two decades. The Biginelli reaction is one of the most important MCRs that provide a practical and efficient method for cycloaddition of aldehyde, 1,3-ketoesters, and urea or thiourea to produce multi-functionalized dihydropyrimidine derivatives (DHPMs) and related heterocyclic compounds. This reaction has been discovered for the first time in 1983 leading to the formation of the desired DHPM by reaction between three compounds: benzaldehydes, urea, and ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of hydrochloric acid in ethanol. Indeed, Biginelli's molecules have been increasingly used in the production of compounds that exhibit a variety of important biological and pharmacological characteristics, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant-antibacterial, antihypertensive, anti-HIV, anti-SARS, anticancer and more activity. Thus, several types of catalysts (homogeneous and heterogeneous) acidic, metallic and non-metallic have been reported in the literature for the above reaction. Hence, the objective of the present project is to develop new non-toxic hybrid catalysts for the preparation of DHPMs via the Biginelli reaction under microwave irradiation.

Profil recherché :

Candidate profile

The candidate will be involved in the design, synthesis, purification, and characterization (HPLC, LC-MS, IR) of the different synthesized molecules. He/she should have a strong background in organic chemistry and should be interested in a multidisciplinary subject involving the development of methodologies in green chemistry and processes. A Master's degree in organic chemistry would be appreciated as he/she will have to demonstrate his/her ability to understand the entire subject.
