Job Title:Mobile App and Data Platform Developer
Area of specialization in IWRI:Machine Learning Applications in Climate Change Impacts on Agriculture
Job description:
We are in search for a one-year term research fellow to work on the above topic. The focus of this position will be to identify ways of closing yield and precipitation gaps through nutrient and water management options. Machine leaning approaches can be particularly useful here in predicting yields and precipitation gaps. Machine learning techniques (Artificial Neural Network-ANN and Support Vector Machines-SVM) go beyond yield and precipitation prediction based on historical data to incorporate computer vision technologies to provide data on weather economic conditions. In addition, machine learning can enhance other facets such as cultivar selection, soil and water management and disease detection. The candidate will use this information to design an App and a data platform that can be utilized by farmers and other stakeholders to close the yield gap.
Key duties:
The key deliverables will include:
- Using machine learning approaches to predict past, present, and future yield and precipitation gaps in Morocco.
- Identify thedrivers of yield and precipitation gaps
- Developing anAppand the data platform
- Piloting grassroot level sessions with smallholder farmers on the use of theAppand the data platform

About IWRI:
IWRI is a transversal structure across several UM6P Programs. Research within the center is organized around several major areas that aim to ensure the challenging Food and Water security goal in Africa, with a special focus on developing methods/tools that use multi-source remotely sensed data. The research aims to improve our understanding of the integrated functioning of continental surfaces and their interaction with climate and humans, with emphasis on sustainable management of natural resources (soil, land, water, agriculture) in the context of Climate Change. One of centers goals is to provide a set of services and operational products to users (local, national, and international) that aid in the decision support of water and food systems.
Profil recherché :
Criteria of the candidate:
The ideal candidate should:
- Must have completed a PhD degree in agronomy, agriculture, water and resource management, and earth or environmental sciences or a related discipline.
- An emerging publication record in nutrient and water management modelling is mandatory.
- Strong empirical and machine learning skills and applications in climate change and agriculture.
- Capable of using at least two of the following software to analyse data such as SPSS, excel, R, Python and MATLAB.
- Experience inAppdevelopment
Skills:
- Candidates should be particularly motivated by and interested in machine learning applications in climate change and impacts on arid food systems at different scales.
- Experience in working with farmers is an added advantage.
