About African integrated Plant and Soil Research Group (AiPlaS)

 

The research will be carried within the AiPlaS research group. AiPlaS aims to conduct hypotheses-driven crop research to meet food and nutritional security in Africa with a focus on three main research topics 1) Resistance to abiotic stresses (drought, temperature, mineral nutrition,…), 2) High Nutritional value germplasm, and 3) Interaction of the aforementioned areas with soil and fertilizers use and agronomy. The AiPlaS research group aims at integrating these objectives in a wider soil and agronomic perspectives by encouraging multi-disciplinary research on the plant and soil continuum.

At UM6P, AiPlaS is building unique research infrastructures (field phenotyping state-of-the art facility and a nutritional quality laboratory). These infrastructures will be used in the frame of this PhD offer.

 

Project description

Feeding a population estimated to reach 9 billion in 2050, whilst fighting climate change consequences on agriculture, constitute major challenges for current and future generations. Out of an estimated portfolio of 30,000 edible plant species recorded worldwide, only a few are widely consumed as human food and traded. This situation has major implications for the future of food security and the conservation of vegetal biodiversity. More research has to be undertaken on these underutilized species to better understand their characteristics and how they can be integrated in local cropping systems. Vigna genus is an agriculturally important taxon, which comprises 10 domesticated species and more than 100 wild species that are yet to be explored. This large range of species could represent a diverse genetic pool where to look for adaptive genes, which could be used for developing stress-resistant crops.

 

Main objectives:

 

The purpose of this Ph.D. is to explore the untapped genetic diversity in different Vigna species and evaluate their stress tolerance response to abiotic stresses (mainly drought and heat) as well as their capacity to use nutrients (with a focus on Phosphorus). Finally, the Ph. D work could result in the identification of traits combination and phenotype adapted to difficult agricultural environments.

 

Scope and outline of thesis

  1. Study of the diversity of Vigna and germplasm set selection: Vigna is a complex genus consisting of five subgenera, more than 88 taxa and including 10 domesticated crops along with more than 100 wild species. The importance and uniqueness of this research relies on the use of both cultivated and wild species. Wild species have been under-exploited so far, and could hold an important nutritional, stress tolerance and economical potential.
  2. Identification of traits: Vigna germplasm will be screened for their physiological and agronomic performances under environmental stresses, main target traits being both drought and low phosphorus. Thus, differential Vigna response will be evaluated during open-field trials. Field trials will also support the exploration of relationship between observed traits, and the adaptation of the different Vigna phenotypes to different growing conditions.

 

Funding information

This award includes funding for two full-time PhD project studentships one focusing more on the physiological and agronomic aspect and the other on the genetic aspect of the research questions. It carries a good salary, intended to cover both living costs and tuition fees.
