International Water Research Institute (IWRI)
Position Announcement
Job Title: Research Engineer position in Climate modeling
Area of specialization in IWRI Research and Education: Climate modeling and water cycle variability and change in (North-)Africa
Job description:
The International Water Research Institute (IWRI) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) invites applications for Research Engineer position specialized in Climate Modeling. The Maghreb is currently facing strong pressures on water resources due to demographic growth and intensification of agricultural activities, but also, and even more importantly, owing to climate change. The adaptation strategies, regarding the use of water resources and the infrastructure policies that shall be decided, depend strongly on our understanding of the physical processes that govern the water cycle in this region and on our ability to predict the evolution of the north-African climate in the coming decades. Within this context, IWRI-UM6P in partnership with Ecole Polytechnique (the X, France), is implementing a climate modeling project with the objective of developing a “North African” configuration of the coupled atmosphere (LMDZ) and land-surface (ORCHIDEE) components (Hourdin et al., 2020, Cheruy et al. 2020) of the IPSL-Climate Model (Boucher et al. 2020) to improve capturing the characteristics of the regional climate in this part of Africa.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development and implementation of a refined (zoomed) grid of the model over Morocco and North-Africa (e.g Coindreau et al., 2007, Cheruy et al., 2014, Diallo et al., 2017). This, including the verification and validation of model components features and carrying out model experiments in different HPCs clusters as well as supporting other team members in related technical and numerical tasks.
The successful candidate will have experience in numerical weather and/or climate modeling, very good programming skills in parallel programming models and high-level computer languages as well as a very good experience with UNIX/LINUX environments and scripting. A good knowledge of climate dynamics, Moroccan and north African climate is an asset.
The job is part of a collaboration between UM6P (IWRI) and the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (CNRS) of Ecole Polytechnique in France and requires from the candidate good skills to work within multi-institutional cooperation projects.
