Internal Job Description

Evaporite-hosted potash deposits are the main source of K-rich salts such as K chloride, K-Mg chloride, and K sulfate. Morocco hosts several sedimentary evaporite basins, mostly Triassic in age, among which the Khemisset basin is particularly suitable for bearing potash deposits. The sedimentary sequence mainly consists of red argillites and evaporites forming a series more than 1000 m-thick.

The Geology & Sustainable Mining Institute of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University is recruiting a senior technician on a one-year, fixed-term contract in the field of sedimentology, mineralogy and geochemistry to characterize the entire sedimentary sequence of the Khemisset basin, with emphasis on K-rich mineralized ores. Depending on the results obtained and the candidate's aptitude for research, the proposed contract may lead - after selection by an ad hoc committee - to a thesis at UM6P from 2023-2024. The thesis subject will notably include building an exploration model for the Moroccan basins.

Main activities of the successful candidate will include:

• Mineralogical and sedimentological characterization of the sedimentary sequence from drill cores,
• Chemical core scanning and chemical analysis of selected samples with the analytical methods available at the OCP-UM6P Geo-Analytical Lab of Ben Guerir,
• Contributing with the geology team to constraining a genetic model, a task which will require carrying out a comprehensive literature review,
• Collaborating with the mineral processing team involved in the valorisation project.

Profil recherché :

• Possess a master’s degree or equivalent degree in earth sciences, geology, sedimentology, natural mineral resources, and/or other related fields ;
• Demonstrate a proven knowledge of minerals characterization and main analytical techniques in elementary geochemistry - a working knowledge in borehole measurements, core scanning and 3D geological modelling will be highly appreciated ;
• Have good communication and writing skills in English and French;
• Be proactive and willing to work in an inter/multidisciplinary environment;
• Be autonomous, capable of innovation and initiative.
