Poste :

Like many countries around the world, Morocco is dealing with serious environmental issues that threaten its ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainable growth. In the case of the Tadla Plain, region of interest of this PhD project, Water stress is the main driver for land degradation, crop loss, and poverty-driven migration of people to urban areas. Furthermore, land and water degradations are caused by intensive agricultural practices, leading to the loss of topsoil and decreased fertility. Additionally, improper irrigation techniques and excessive groundwater extraction contribute to water scarcity and salinization, affecting crop yields and the availability of freshwater resources for both agricultural and domestic use. These environmental challenges create a ripple effect throughout the region, affecting the livelihoods of local communities, income generation, food security, and overall socio-economic stability. This PhD research proposal aims to investigate the actual environmental challenges specific to the Tadla plain as one of the main agricultural zones in Morocco (more than 300 000 Ha) and propose integrated and sustainable practices for mitigating these challenges. Specifically, the projected work will be focused on investigating the extent and underlying causes of soil and water degradation by employing a novel and multidisciplinary approach. The research seeks to unravel the complex interactions between Environmental Degradation, Socio-Economic factors in order to contribute toward an effective and sustainable measures that can mitigate these aforementioned challenges, safeguard agricultural productivity, preserve the environment, and enhance the overall socio-economic resilience of the Tadla Plain.

Key duties:

The proposed research includes the following tasks:

1. Experimental fieldwork, including socio-economic field surveys, soil and water sampling, Laboratory Analyses, and Geophysics experiment.

2. Images analysis from Remote Sensing and UAV datasets for LULC and Soil mapping.

3. Preparing peer-reviewed scientific publications and presentation for scientific conferences.

In addition, the PhD student is expected to work in collaboration with IWRI and CRSA teams, in particular other PhD students, both in the field and in the laboratory; carry out field experiments and therefore be comfortable in working in rural environment.

Master's degree in Geomatics, Computer sciences, physics sciences, earth, or environmental sciences and technical (engineering).

Skills:

Candidate should be familiar with soil and water analyses, remote sensing techniques, data analysis, and must have an affinity with the computer programming tools (Python, R), GIS techniques
