Poste :
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to conduct research on improving fertilizer adoption by smallholder farmers in Morocco and Africa. The candidate will collaborate with the fertilizer manufacturer, and other research institutions in Morocco and the Sub-Sahara. The objective of this project is to inform on fertilizer adoption rates by smallholder farmers, and to shed light on the low values sometimes recorded, contributing to productivity problems, poverty and food insecurity. The candidate will use economic interventions, experimental and semi-experimental methods and survey studies to investigate farmers' decision-making processes and preferences for fertilizer adoption. The results of the research will contribute to the development of government policies, supply by producers to better match demand.
Key duties:
The key deliverables will include:
1)????Conduct a systematic review of existing knowledge in the use of experiments in fertilizers and inputs (water) use in agriculture research, with a special focus on smallholders, and identify current research gaps.
2)????Develop a research plan under advisors’ supervision.
3)????Develop questionnaires and other experimental material to better understand farmers decision making and their fertilizer use behavior
4)????Conduct field (and laboratory) experiments to collect experimental data, and administer questionnaire to complete the analysis
5)????Contribute in survey sampling and other technical/administrative/ethical approval steps.
6)????Report and draft documents on data collection and carry econometric analyses to derive original results regarding farmers' behavior, and discuss the economic insights considering the literature
7)????Present results and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
8)????Be involved in other projects at SAES College.
Profil recherché :
Criteria of the candidate:
The ideal candidate should:
1.????Have a master’s degree in social sciences (economics or agricultural economics), Econometrics, geography, rural engineering, soil sciences or a related discipline, with a rigorous quantitative and data analysis training.
2.????Prior experience in experimental and quasi-experimental methods OR in collecting data and managing survey data would be a strong asset
3.????Show ability and willingness to draft, design and administer survey questionnaires.
4.????Knowledge of smallholder farming systems in Africa and Morocco would be an asset
5.????Excellent Excel skills and proficiency in the use of main statistical software (SPSS, R, STATA) for econometric analysis.
6.????Excellent command of the English language for oral and written communication.
7.????Fluency in French and (Moroccan) Arabic will be a strong asset.
8.????Flexibility and willingness to travel to rural areas.
9.????A publication record is an asset
