UM6P CEDOC-IS&T: Advanced valorization of phosphogypsum: Development of innovative low-cost ceramic and cementitious materials by incorporation of organic and inorganic additives

The valorization of industrial waste materials has gained significant attention in recent years as a means to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impacts. Phosphogypsum (PG), a byproduct of the phosphoric acid production process, is a waste material that poses significant disposal challenges due to its large quantities and potential environmental hazards. This research project aims to explore innovative approaches for the valorization of PG in the fabrication of low-cost ceramic and cementitious materials. By leveraging the unique properties of PG, this study seeks to develop novel techniques, formulations, and processing methods that optimize its use, reduce production costs, and enhance the sustainability of ceramic and cementitious materials manufacturing.

This research proposal aims to explore advanced methods for the efficient utilization of PG in the production of affordable ceramic and cementitious materials. By employing organic and inorganic additives (polymers, clays, zeolites and others) , this study seeks to develop innovative approaches that will enhance the value of PG. Through comprehensive investigations into modification techniques, formulation design, and advanced processing methods, a deeper understanding of PG will be achieved.

The primary objective of this research project is to fabricate low-cost ceramic and cementitious materials that can serve as viable alternatives to traditional construction materials. By doing so, it will address both the economic and environmental challenges associated with PG disposal. These novel materials have the potential to offer cost-effective solutions while simultaneously contributing to sustainable practices.

By effectively utilizing PG waste, the outcomes of this project will align with the principles of the circular economy. The research findings will not only contribute to sustainable manufacturing practices but also promote the efficient use of resources. Through the development of innovative valorization techniques, this study will pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and economically viable approach to ceramic and cementitious material production.

The position is open at the Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation (IST&I) of UM6P under the direction of Professor Redouane BENIAZZA.
